Hailing from Kristiansand, Norway, In Vain has been a pioneering force in Norwegian progressive extreme metal since 2003. Founded by guitarist Johnar Haaland and vocalist Andreas Frigstad, the band's melodic extreme metal sound, set them apart early on.

In 2007, In Vain released their first full-length album, "The Latter Rain", a collaborative effort with nearly 20 guest musicians, showcasing their prowess in diverse, progressive arrangements. Subsequent albums like "Mantra" (2010) and "Ænigma" (2013) continued to push musical boundaries.

"Currents", a double-edition masterpiece exploring contemporary societal shifts was then released in 2018. Declared "Album of the Year" and garnered perfect scores from various publications worldwide, including 10/10 ratings from Metal Temple (UK), Metal Only (GER), and Heavy- Metal.de (GER) to name a few.

With a rich history of live performances, including European tours with Solefald, Borknagar, Vreid and Keep of Kalessin. In Vain remains a powerhouse in extreme metal, captivating audiences with their dynamic compositions, and their reputation as a force in progressive extreme metal is firmly established. The band's ability to seamlessly blend progressive drive, playfulness, touching vocals, and metallic hardness sets them apart, as attested by reviews such as “In Vain proves once again that they are masters of their art...” - Cultur Addict (FR)

In Vain stands as a testament to the enduring innovation within progressive metal, shaping the future of the genre. Their upcoming album “Solemn” is set to release April 19th 2024.

About the upcoming album the band states: "Our new album Solemn is a triumphant manifestation of In Vain’s epic journey spanning over two decades. This powerhouse record encapsulates our legendary past, while also venturing down fresh, uncharted paths. Clocking in at an hour, it's offers plenty to dig into. We're beyond stoked with the final outcome. Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studio, outdid himself this time and delivered a colossal production that the music truly deserves."

"Solemn" is showcasing exceptional musicianship across the board, and further elevating the experience with a resplendent, organic production, masterfully honed to perfection by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Katatonia, Devin Townsend, Kreator, etc).

Lyrics: Black moon rising Intrusive thoughts Compulsive disorder Poison of the mind and soul A new conqueror on the throne Who alters your perception And tears ambitions down What do we fear with all our hearts? Why do our burdens tear us apart? Why do we search within our soul? What are the things we are yearning for? What are we searching for? Down to our inner core On a descending path What are we searching for? Black moon rising Shadows flap their black wings Intrusive thoughts Shadows flap their black wings Force-fed delusions From your own mind Negative mentation Reason is clouding Ambitions are burning When the world has taken its toll Your own self Brings on your nemesis Confessor of sins Soul sacrifice Mere vision sustains Desperation remains Rise from the ashes Reclaim your life Search for tranquility Be one with your soul and mind

Under water, out of breath, struggling to the surface Constant state of panic, looking for a purpose The world as we know it is fading away We're slouching towards our final day. How do you breathe when there is no air? Watch the collapse, inhale the despair Tired of living, scared of dying The scorn in us is horrifying Accept the sentence Or roam in the shadows No repentance (Step up) to the gallows! Lies and deception rule the nations Forcing the world towards damnation The sovereigns lead the masses astray Enforcing the age of moral decay Tired of living, scared of dying The scorn in us is horrifying Accept the sentence Or roam in the shadows No repentance (Step up) to the gallows!

Lyrics: Towering clouds over flowering fields The dawn of a dark season Unleashed is all that light conceals Challenging sense and reason The path ahead is steep and narrow Trying to find a way Despair pierces my skin, heart and marrow Turmoil blights the day The path ahead is steep and narrow Trying to find a way Despair builds up in me The night is drawing closer The walls are caving in Sinking into the unknown Panic spreads, asphyxiating It's the season of unrest Will this be my requiem? Mortality exposed Vulnerability imposed Normality foreclosed I close my eyes and bask in flowering fields Dismiss the pain and ignore what's real Reject reality, construct my own Burn everything to the fucking ground The night is drawing closer The walls are caving in Sinking into the unknown Panic spreads, asphyxiating It's the season of unrest Darkness threatens to unfold Fertile fields turned to barren land In an instant the future looks bleak Mighty mountains crushed to sand Enough to make the strong heart weak Will I hear his voice, will he know my face? Is it far what seemed so near? No way out of this ghastly maze Desolation and despair The night is drawing closer The walls are caving in Sinking into the unknown Panic spreads, asphyxiating Here's the season of unrest Has my time come? Tears won't arise Oppress my weary eyes

Lyrics: Far we have wandered Many obstacles in our path Through trials and hardship Our journey carries on With adherence to our calling And devotion to our creed A lifelong bond of fire The last of a dying breed At the going down of the sun Until the end When days are gone When the sun no longer sets When we're closing in The burning flame will guide us Through centuries Ethereal light guides us Time is now Our passion burns stronger Our spirits remain free As we walk the earth As free men At the going down of the sun We shall remain
5.
Over crystal ground Clouds break splintered by streams of light Beneath the shimmer The essence of creation Over the mountains and over the deep The wind howls As the land awakens Their lies mistaken Their lives forsaken Their minds awakened With hearts unshaken A leaf soaring through the air On a peaceful voyage to distant lands Where dreams will never fade Where we will not grow old One day life's journey will bring us there To a place where the winds meet Hear the cries of the wind Someone is searching For a new direction For a new meaning Like a leaf soaring through the air With blissful intention On a peaceful voyage To a place where the winds meet again
6.
The fire of delusion burns higher Contaminates the wretched soul Malevolent and dire Towards its heinous goal The flame imperils all Logic and reason will fall Intellect's withdrawal This is the final call Where fear assails Reason is swept away Mans mournful wail On the thoughtless path to decay When such thoughts gain ground The vile set out to betray Until the villain is crowned Beyond the pale When stupidity stands uncontradicted The senseless define existence Where rationality is restricted Affliction ravages with no resistance The omen of death On a dystopian path Fueled by man´s wrath As we gasp for breath Where fear assails Reason is swept away Mans mournful wail On the thoughtless path to decay When such thoughts gain ground The vile set out to betray Until the villain is crowned Beyond the pale
7.
Wistful gait towards the abyss The only way to make amends Humankind has been remiss The point of no return We stand at the edge of oblivion And we are asking ourselves: Is this how it ends? Dismay, despair, chaos Terror, anguish, hurt I see nothing but death now But blood makes the grass grow Every day brings more destruction Desolation of body and mind Forcing the masses to eruption The devastation of all mankind Dismay, despair, chaos Terror, anguish, hurt I see nothing but death now But blood makes the grass grow Will we be contagious? Will we be rampageous? Time to be courageous So let's ascend and assemble And take back what's ours Rise to the beat of the masses marching Rise to the dire chants of war Stand up for what you believe in Head held high, let's settle the score
8.
Staring at the ceaseless, eternal waves Met by shores of sand Tides crushing against the palisades Scattered pearls Dissolving into the water Let there be eternal waves To wash away our sins When the storm roars We hum the tune of the ocean Chanting to the rhythm of the tides With our eyes set on the ceaseless, eternal waves Morning glimmers in the distance Yellow rays of the setting sun Tracing azure skies Pines bending with the moon-set currents Life renewed and ended In the oceans of infinity Let there be eternal waves To wash away our sins When the storm roars We hum the tune of the ocean Chanting to the rhythm of the tides With our eyes set on the ceaseless, eternal waves Dance to the endless pulse of the universe And surrender to the tide of destiny In the oceans of infinity
9.
A promising season Laid to dust by the hands of man Hope for better future That would bring life to a barren land All came to an end So many good people gone now Swept away like leaves in the wind So many never saw a new dawn Fates torn apart by a life of sin Their dreams were not meant to be When the heavens are calling my name Watch for me on the mountain And when the creator has broken the chains Watch for me on the mountain As the rivers of times are flowing A new era will come Of rebirth and revival Where we will sing songs of joy And prepare for the harvests to come In the arrows of eternity our journey carries on When a new day is dawning In the blossoming days of spring There will be a new start When the heavens are calling my name Watch for me on the mountain And until that day Let the light be your guide And follow the path of the righteous
